We interviewed Martin, our new Hospital Director at our Nuffield Health Woking Hospital. Read on for an insight into Martin’s career journey from the Armed Forces and for some insight into the day in the life of a Hospital Director with us.
Can you tell us a little bit about you?
I have been working at Nuffield Health for 2 months having previously worked for BMI in Winchester for 2 years and before that with Care UK for 5 years in several different locations in the UK but latterly in Sheffield.
I am married with a daughter who has gifted me with two beautiful Grandsons Joshua who is 2 and Charlie who is 5.
I spent 12 years in the Royal Navy as a Marine Engineer and served with the task force in the Falklands conflict.
What does your average day consist of?
I work as a Hospital Director at Woking Hospital. Being new into post no two days are the same, however a typical day for me involves (once I have my first cup of tea in hand) preparing for the day. I review the internal systems so I can provide operational updates and priorities and brief the departments at the ‘ten at ten’. This review also ensures that I am clear about my priorities for the day. I generally walk the floor and go into every department to get a feel for how things are with the Woking team. Then it is into managing the hospital on a day to day basis whilst developing a five-year strategy for the hospital. I am a great believer that if ‘you do not know where you are going any road will take you there’.
What got you into the Hospital world?
I really came into healthcare by accident, I was managing the BMW training academy and was looking for a challenging operational role closer to home and an opportunity presented itself with Care UK almost 8 years ago.
Having come from a military back ground and having had senior operational roles in various industries. I find my experiences invaluable in the hospital and an it is an environment where I can use situational leadership. It is also the most rewarding of roles and one where you get to see the positive impact of your staff on people’s lives almost immediately.
