Julie – Theatre Sister

"My first theatre job was while serving in the Royal Navy. I like theatre because the teamwork is so strong, it seems to come out more than in other specialties - especially in situations where things are critical - everyone just snaps into action and comes together. That's when you see people at their best.

While working on the bank at Nuffield Hospital, I was offered my position as theatre sister in 2001 and I've been here ever since. I like it - I like the variety and I love the staff - they're very friendly. Everybody knows everybody so you get to know the other departments very well. It's different to a bigger hospital where you could wander around all day and not see anyone you know.

The hospital performs most kinds of surgery, with the exception of cardiac and neurological. This gives our staff real variety in their work, with patients undergoing a range of procedures including orthopaedic, plastic, urological and ENT surgery, endoscopy and laparoscopy.

For me personally, Nuffield have been enormously supportive.I'm a single mother and they're very flexible - they allow me to work slightly different hours so I can take my daughter to nursery before I come to work - a lot of other places wouldn't let me do that but here they're very family friendly."
