We spoke to Jenny about what brought her to our Cheltenham Hospital as a Staff Nurse in April 2019;

What attracted you to your first job here?

I was attracted to working for Nuffield Health as I wanted to gain experience working in the Private sector and I am always keen to learn and expand my knowledge within the surgical field.  Nuffield Health offered the opportunity to care for a variety of patients who have had a diverse range of different procedures and surgery.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy working within a very dedicated, experienced and talented team of Nurses.  The ability to be able to provide quality individualised and personal care to patients and their families.   Being able to care for the patients both pre and post operatively and support them through a positive  journey through the hospital, it is a very rewarding Job.

Tell us about a typical day in your job?

Admitting patients to the ward and preparing them for surgery.   Receiving patients from Theatre and caring for them post-op  on the ward and seeing them through to discharge provides a very personal touch to the care they receive, this is very rewarding and provides quality care to all patients.  Building up a rapport with the patients and their families, being able to provide reassurance to any patients who may be anxious about their upcoming surgery.  Medication rounds and providing appropriate wound care using A-septic technique.  Liaising with the multi-disciplinary team and Consultants on a regular basis.

Do you have any key achievements you would like to share?

I have attended mandatory study days such as RADAR and ILS which were both fantastic and very valuable courses for any registered nurse.  These courses will help with all future practice and provides the skills and knowledge to assess patients and identify early any deteriorating patients.   Working with a variety of Consultants from different specialties has already increased my knowledge considerably.  I have been learning the Co-ordinator role on the ward to enable me to take charge on shifts regularly.

For someone looking to be a staff nurse at Nuffield Health, do you have any advice or top tips?

I would recommend that they have a very keen interest and willingness to develop their knowledge and skills in a wide variety of specialties.  Also that they enjoy working as part of a team and want to provide the best possible care to their patients.

What do you enjoy the most about working for Nuffield Health?

I enjoy working in a very friendly and welcoming team who support each other to provide the best quality care for the patients. The wide variety of different specialities and opportunity to learn new skills and develop your knowledge.   The flexibility of the shift patterns and the benefits provided to you.

The professional and personal wellbeing of our staff is important to us.  How do you benefit from a work life balance with us?

The ability to be more flexible with shifts and good shift times helps with a good work life balance.  The benefits provided to staff by Nuffield Health helps to ensure the wellbeing of the staff.
