Up to £26,250 per annum, depending on experience
37.5 hours per week

An exciting new role at Cardiff and Vale hospitals for a Physiotherapy Assistant has come up, which will be working with our highly experienced Physiotherapy team.

Roles and responsibilities for this role will include:

  • To undertake specific skilled support work to aid the rehabilitation of patients.

  • To assist the qualified physiotherapist in the assessment and rehabilitation of patients.

  • To accept patients referred by a qualified physiotherapist, and carry as own patient case load and manage and prioritise own patient case load delegated by the qualified physiotherapist

  • To treat patients according to set treatment protocols, monitoring patient progression, making minor alterations to patient treatment programmes as required, and, ensuring the qualified physiotherapist is informed of any changes or problems.

  • To work unsupervised reporting back patient progress and informing the qualified physiotherapist of any problems.

  • To manage the rehabilitation of patients as delegated by the qualified physiotherapist, working without direct supervision, and, being responsible for assessing patient progress and reporting back to physiotherapist.

  • To have knowledge in the available range of mobility aids, including equipment for bariatric patients, and to be able to accurately measure for patients, order, and instruct patients in their use.

  • To encourage patients and their careers in an active approach to regaining and maintaining personal independence. This requires empathy, sensitivity and good interpersonal skills.

  • To communicate effectively with other health care staff, patients and carers by using effective verbal and nonverbal communication. Including situations where there may be barriers or resistance to understanding.

  • To keep accurate records of work undertaken in accordance with CSP and Physiotherapy Service standards for clinical documentation

  • To keep accurate patient activity information for own clinical caseload.

  • To liaise with the physiotherapist as necessary regarding patient care. In particular highlighting any variations to expected outcomes from treatment programmes delivered

  • To assist with the administrative duties related to the running of a physiotherapy department, such as reception cover, TM2 diary management,

  • To maintain levels of stock equipment, anticipate periods of higher use, and order stock e.g. mobility aids and aids for activities of daily living etc. To report any problems to the qualified physiotherapist.

  • To contribute to development of physiotherapy service delivery and patient care by attending relevant team, departmental or other appropriate meetings and comment on recommended changes to clinical care or service provision.

  • To undertake general administrative duties e.g. photocopying, retrieving records, telephone calls to other healthcare workers and patients and carers, in support of the clinical process.

  • To participate in changes in service delivery across the in-patient and outpatient areas in order to provide an efficient and effective physiotherapy service.

  • To aid the management of departmental cleanliness and infection prevention standards, in conjunction with hospital protocols and the house keeping team

  • To have a basic understanding of all aspects of clinical governance and to be able to apply this to own practice.

  • To keep treatment areas safe and tidy. This includes; cleaning the physiotherapy equipment regularly and ensure that no damaged or problem equipment is used.

  • To be responsible for the safe use of physiotherapy equipment and aids by patients in own care, and, to report and remove any faulty equipment.

  • To understand and apply Health and Safety Policies in particular, those relating to infection control, lone working,

  • To report clinical incidents and near misses in accordance with the Nuffield Incident reporting and near miss procedures.

  • To participate in audit projects within the clinic section.

  • To attend and actively participate in the scheduled in-service education programme for Assistant staff and at the wider clinical service events across the service.

  • To be responsible for own continuing development and to be able to demonstrate needs and achievements through own personal development plan.

  • To attend mandatory training events

  • Support the weekend rota
