The Opportunity

Our Facilities and CBRE team plays an essential role in ensuring our hospital remains safe, clean, professional, and welcoming for every patient, visitor, and member of staff who walks through our doors. The Handyman / Maintenance Operative will provide a high-quality, reliable, and professional maintenance and repair service across Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital. The primary focus of this role is painting, decorating, and minor fabric works, with the broader responsibility of helping to maintain a safe, presentable, and welcoming environment across all hospital areas.

They will be expected to work with minimal disruption to patients, visitors, and clinical staff, treating everyone they encounter with professionalism, dignity, and respect

The Role:

Painting, Decorating and Fabric Works

  • Carry out internal and external painting and decorating tasks to a consistently high standard.

  • Prepare surfaces thoroughly prior to decorating, including filling, sanding, patching, and priming.

  • Complete minor fabric repairs to walls, doors, door frames, skirting boards, ceilings, fixtures, and fittings.

  • Ensure all finished work is presented to a professional standard appropriate to a private hospital environment.

General Maintenance and CBRE Support

  • Undertake a range of general maintenance and minor repair tasks within competence and authorisation.

  • Support planned maintenance, refurbishment, and improvement projects as directed by the Facilities Manager.

  • Move furniture and equipment safely as required to facilitate maintenance activities.

  • Identify defects, hazards, and areas requiring specialist attention and report these promptly to the Facilities Manager.

  • Maintain tools, materials, and work areas in a clean, organised, and safe condition at all times.

Health, Safety and Infection Control

  • Work in full compliance with Nuffield Health's health and safety policies and all relevant legislation.

  • Follow hospital infection prevention and control procedures at all times, particularly when working in patient-facing areas.

  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for each task.

  • Report all accidents, incidents, near misses, and hazards in line with hospital policy without delay.

Patient and Visitor Experience

  • Ensure all maintenance activities are carried out with minimal disruption to patients, visitors, and clinical staff.

  • Treat every patient, visitor, and colleague encountered with courtesy, dignity, and respect.

  • Maintain awareness of the hospital environment and act in a manner that upholds Nuffield Health's reputation for high-quality care.

Communication and Teamwork

  • Liaise regularly with the Facilities Manager regarding work progress, priorities, and completion of tasks.

  • Work collaboratively and supportively with the wider Facilities and CBRE team.

  • Support the Facilities team with ad hoc duties as reasonably required.

  • Possess good customer service skills, as this is a customer facing role

The role requires working across all areas of Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital, including patient-facing wards and rooms, corridors, offices, theatres, and service spaces. The postholder should be prepared to:

  • Stand, walk, and move around the hospital for extended periods during a shift.

  • Carry out physical tasks including bending, kneeling, and lifting materials safely.

  • Work at height where required, using appropriate equipment in line with safe working procedures.

  • Adapt flexibly to changing priorities and operational needs as directed by the Facilities Manager.

  • Work bank hours on a flexible basis, to be agreed, with the potential for occasional variation depending on planned maintenance or urgent works.
